Obituary

Estrella Y. Galang, RN, age 76, lovingly known to many as “Star,” passed away in Park Ridge, Illinois, surrounded by the love and presence of her family.

Estrella was the beloved wife of the late Diosdado Galang, Jr., and the devoted daughter of the late Francesco Ylar and Lourdes (née Basquial).

Born in the Philippines, Estrella built a life rooted in faith, family, compassion, and service. As a CCU/ICU nurse for many years at Grant Hospital in Chicago and later at Holy Family Hospital in Des Plaines, she devoted her career to caring for others during some of their most difficult and vulnerable moments. She approached her work with skill, kindness, patience, and grace—qualities she also shared generously with her family, friends, and everyone fortunate enough to know her, and her compassion extended far beyond her work.

She was the dear sister of Venancio (Corazon) Ylar, Nazario (Exaltacion) Ylar, Gaspar (Perlita) Ylar, and the late Editha (Hilario) Molitio and Lorenzo Menzi. She was also the fond aunt of many nieces and nephews and a cherished relative and friend whose memory will be held close by all who loved her.

Estrella will be remembered for her loving heart, her steadfast devotion to family, and the quiet strength and warmth she brought into the lives of others. She had a wonderful sense of humor and her laughter was contagious. These simple joys reflected the warmth, spirit, and love of family that were so central to her life.

A longtime resident of Chicago and its surrounding suburbs, Estrella’s loyalty to her city ran deep. She had a true passion for Chicago sports, especially baseball and basketball, and could enthusiastically discuss players, statistics, coaches, memorable games, and unforgettable plays with anyone. She especially loved cheering for the Chicago Bulls—often so loudly from her living room that the neighbors always knew when the Bulls had scored or made a great play. Her excitement, knowledge, and lively spirit made sports conversations with her especially memorable.

Visitation and the Mass of Christian Burial will take place on Saturday, June 20, 2026, at Ascension of Our Lord Catholic Church, 1S314 Summit Avenue, Oakbrook Terrace, Illinois 60181. Visitation will be held from 9:00 to 10:00 a.m., followed by Mass at 10:00 a.m.

Interment will take place in the Philippines.

In lieu of flowers, prayers for Estrella and her family are deeply appreciated. Memorial contributions to Ascension of Our Lord Catholic Church in Estrella’s name would also be gratefully received.
